The Present Moment Is All You Ever Have
I was watching a clip of Keke Palmer on Dr. Oz, and she asked, “if you don’t really need the past, and you don’t ever meet tomorrow. What does that say about life? And it got me thinking. Our thoughts are constantly being pulled to the past or the future, so we’re seldom present in the moment. And if yesterday is history, and tomorrow is a mystery, then the now is the only moment within which we’re present enough to know what it is we really want to do.
Then I realized that what I wanted more of, was to be more present in my life. According to Gary Vaynerchuk “be self aware, double down on your strengths and pay attention to the things that make you pop.” This is why my focus word for 2018 is OPTIMIZE: as in, making the best or most effective use of my time, talents, relationships, situations, opportunities and resources.
Like almost everyone who migrates to the US, I arrived in the Big Apple with big-city dreams. I decided to give myself permission to follow my curiosity and open myself up to possibilities, because like Jay-Z said, U Don’t Know. Against all odds, I made the decision to go after my dreams - laying the bricks one day at a time.
Frank Sinatra said, “if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.” New York City is like graduate school, I matriculated through and my curiosity morphed into a business. Enters Nicole Williams Collective, an agency that’s founded on resilience, innovative thinking and the strength of a teen mom who became a mom boss. Like the city I live in, my mission is to build a business that is culturally savvy, values diversity and inclusion while being socially responsible.
Contrary to some of my clients, I don’t have it all figured out. The only difference is, I’m earning my joy, one day at a time. So what is it that lights you up? While you do want to set your intentions for the future, the now is the time to start living the life you imagined.
