Chantelle Brown-Young: Vitiligo Model Redefining Beauty
Chantelle Brown-Young is a 19 year old Canadian model, who is different from not just most girls her age but also different from the typical fashion model. Chantelle (aka #WinnieHarlow), who you will get to know on cycle 21 of America's Next Top Model (airing this summer), has a rare skin condition called vitiligo (depigmentation of the skin). This is a rare condition which is caused by the death of the cells responsible for pigmentation is a malfunction of the immune system, leaving the skin with two predominant skin tones. The disorder is best known for the change in the late Michael Jackson the King of Pop's skin.
I have not known many people personally with this condition but the one that I do know I must applaud, as he seems to be very secure in himself like Chantelle Brown-Young is. A feat that us so-called normal people have a hard time accomplishing. This however does not mean Chantelle was always this confident in her own appearance; she admitted to the Jamaican (where her parents originates) Gleaner that she in the past has had suicidal thoughts. She was teased and bullied growing up, but look at her now! She is an accomplished mainstream model photographed for her beauty - gracing magazines, music videos and runways.
Koodoos to the fashion industry, a place where the flawless elusive level of physical beauty is greatly celebrated, for embracing models who are unique and different. Like Lupita Nyong'O, Chantelle is pushing the limits and challenging society's parameters of ideal physical beauty. She is the the first mainstream model with the disorder and is proving that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors and disorders; reinforcing the fact that you don't have to succumb to the pressures of being thinner, curvier, taller, or lighter in complexion.
This teen muse who has learned to love herself and accept her difference is now a spokesperson for Vitiligo - she is taking the world by storm! You can follow WinnieHarlow on Instagram where she has a large following and inspiring a nation.
