Pregnancy is supposed to be one of the most beautiful times in any woman's life. However, some women can look dashingly beautiful while others feel like an ugly duckling. Pregnancy can lead to some significant changes in your body, which are often treated with harmful chemicals taken to counteract the various changes that a woman experiences. Hormonal upset in the body can cause really bad acne and a condition called malasma, also called "mask of pregnancy" which appears as dark patches on the skin.

See below for a few tips for those of you who are seeking safe skincare products for during and after pregnancy.

  1. Exfoliation  helps to remove the dead cells which leads to dullness and uneven skin-tone  Try:  Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub, $7.69

  2. Gentle brightening products containing natural ingredients like vitamin C, licorice extract can help diminish discoloration Try: Lucid Brightening Face Serum for Malasma (Mask of Pregnancy), $48

  3. At home micro-derma abrasion treatments and all-natural masks make a great choice  - apply milk or orange masks Try: Clarisonic Skin Mia 2 Sonic Skin Cleansing System, $149

  4. Invest in a  moisturizer that will keep moisture in the skin Try:  Curel Life's Stages Pregnancy & Moisture Cream, $15.88

  5. Ladies, do use products containing glycolic, hydroxy acids and sulfur based topical products instead of those that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or any retinoids as they are unsafe for the baby.
